MMA (Methyl Methacrylate) pavement markings are highly durable, UV-stable, and versatile markings suitable for asphalt and concrete surfaces, offering long-lasting visibility and resistance to harsh weather and traffic conditions.

Overview of MMA Pavement Markings

MMA pavement markings are two-component, durable materials designed for long line and transverse line applications on roads, highways, and specialized lanes such as bus or bike lanes (ENNIS-FLINT® by PPG). They are engineered to adhere strongly to both asphalt and concrete, providing a service life often exceeding three years, which is significantly longer than standard traffic paints. MMA markings are resistant to oils, antifreeze, snowplow damage, and other common roadway chemicals, making them ideal for high-traffic and harsh-weather environments.

Key Advantages

  • Durability and Longevity: MMA markings maintain their integrity under heavy traffic and extreme weather, reducing the need for frequent reapplication.
  • UV and Color Stability: They use color-stable pigments and resins, minimizing fading and maintaining high visibility over time.
  • Cold-Weather Application: MMA can cure at temperatures as low as 35°F (2°C) without external heat, making it suitable for year-round application in cold climates.
  • Skid Resistance: When combined with aggregates, MMA provides a skid-resistant surface, enhancing safety in wet or slippery conditions.
  • Reflectivity: Embedded reflective glass beads improve nighttime visibility, which is particularly beneficial for roads with poor lighting or during rainy conditions.

Application Methods

MMA can be applied using screed, extrusion, profiling, or spraying, with film thicknesses ranging from 10 to 500 mils depending on the application. It can be surface-applied or inlaid for longer service life. The material forms a strong bond through an exothermic reaction during mixing, which ensures adhesion without the need for external heat. Specialized equipment is required for proper application, but MMA’s flexibility allows it to be used in a wide range of climates and conditions.

Unlike thermoplastics, which require high temperatures (400–450°F) for application and are prone to damage from freeze-thaw cycles or snowplows, MMA markings adhere well in cold or wet conditions and resist wear from plowing and heavy traffic.. MMA also offers longer-lasting reflectivity and color stability, making it a preferred choice for areas where visibility and durability are critical..

Applications

MMA markings are suitable for:

  • Highways and streets for long-lasting lane lines
  • Crosswalks and symbols requiring high visibility
  • Bike lanes and bus lanes with specialized color treatments

Areas with heavy snow or chemical exposure where durability is essential. MMA pavement markings provide a cost-effective, long-term solution for road safety and visibility, particularly in challenging climates or high-traffic areas. Their combination of durability, adhesion, and reflectivity makes them a superior alternative to traditional paints and thermoplastics.
