Preformed thermoplastic pavement markings are durable, heat-applied traffic markings designed for long-lasting visibility, skid resistance, and retro-reflectivity.

Overview

Preformed thermoplastic pavement markings are factory-manufactured solid compounds containing pigments, glass beads, binders, and fillers that become liquid when heated for application on road surfaces. Unlike traditional thermoplastic applied with on-site melters, preformed markings are precut into lines, symbols, letters, arrows, or custom designs, allowing for easy and precise installation using a propane torch or infrared heater. They are widely used for transverse markings, legends, crosswalks, arrows, and custom horizontal signage on streets, highways, and airport surfaces.

Advantages

  • Durability: Lasts 6–10 times longer than conventional paint, reducing maintenance frequency.
  • Retroreflectivity: Embedded glass beads provide high visibility at night and in wet conditions.
  • Skid Resistance: Optional additives like Tuff-Grip™ enhance traction for vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Ease of Application: Requires only surface cleaning and heating; no heavy machinery is needed.
  • Flexibility: Maintains integrity in cold temperatures without cracking or breaking.
  • Customizability: Available in various colors, thicknesses, and designs, including compliance with AASHTO, FHWA, and state-specific standards.

Application Process

  1. Surface Preparation: Sweep and clean the pavement to remove debris.
  2. Heating: Use a propane torch or infrared heater to heat the preformed marking and the pavement surface.
  3. Placement: Lay the preformed marking on the heated surface.
  4. Top Heating: Continue heating until the material melts and bonds to the pavement.
  5. Cooling: Allow the marking to cool before opening to traffic.
Some products, like top-heat-only preformed thermoplastics, simplify the process further by requiring heat only from above.

Applications

  • Roadways: Lane lines, arrows, crosswalks, and symbols.
  • Airports: Taxiways, hold positions, aprons, and aircraft parking areas.
  • Streetscapes: Decorative or functional markings for pedestrian zones and custom designs.
